Attention: This New Scam Could Affect You or Your Tenants!
Forwarded from The Fair Housing Council of Oregon
|
We have been contacted by an agency in Eastern Oregon who is working with a consumer who received the attached letter. This letter is a scam.
This letter appears to be offering some sort of increase in funding or pay, it states that distribution of the funding will be done through electronic transfer and asks the person who received the letter to call and update their status…this is code for, “Give me your personal information so I can drain your bank account and/or get you to send me money, and possibly steal your identity.”
The sending party does not clearly identify who they are, and they include information about federally funded housing and the fair housing logo, this makes it look like it could be coming from the housing authority or HUD.
HUD does not electronically send consumers any type of funding nor does the housing authority. Their services are through subsidies that are sent to landlords and through banks for homeownership purposes.
Please share this document with others in your agency, community partners, and the consumers that you provide services for. In addition, if anyone receives a letter like this, please have them report the scam to the Oregon Attorney General’s Office.
